Art Studio Night!

some of the best student work from all the art courses in the high school will be on display for your viewing pleasure!

THINK ART ...

anyone out there experienced ART brain? you know when you get so into your art that you start seeing everything as art?

...well, it seemed worthy of a post especially as the year comes to a close and you will be out of the art room (not necessarily the art brain) for the summer!

here is a little art brain workout session to get you in the mood for making:

1. beautify ...try to seek the beauty in things that seem anything but beautiful

2. deconstruct ...break down your surroundings into only values, then shapes, then colors, then forms

3. translate ...when you feel ANYTHING think about how you could turn emotion into creation


4. cultivate awareness ...be present, try to discover who you are, what you are, how you are, and put intention into your actions

i went to an artist's studio once and he had a huge sculpture of a hand. he had us stop and look at it before moving on and when we were in the next room he asked if anyone had noticed anything unusual about the hand. none of us had noticed that this huge sculpture had an extra finger!

...think about how much slips by us when we just go through the motions

Local Artist of the Month!

clay is in the air for my studio art class ...and on your hands, clothes, brain, etc.! 

take a second to check out work by local ceramic artist nancy jurs.

i love the sensory quality of her work and how she translates her ideas through clay. she uses form and color in a really beautiful way.

her work is really diverse and some of her clay sculptures are monumental!

Scholastic Art Award Winners!

congrats to the 27(YES 27!!!) students from thomas who received scholastic art awards!

over 100, 000 students from across the country submit work to be judged by professionals who then select a small percentage of pieces to receive awards and an even smaller number to go on to compete at a national level.

artists andy warhol, philip pearlstein, and cy twombly are all scolastic alumni!

Rochester Finger Lakes MS/HS Exhibition at RIT!

stop by the bevier gallery at rit tonight from 5-7 for the opening, or any time until the 25th to check out some of the best student artwork in the area!

special congrats to lindsay jones and connor czora who were selected by the faculty at rit for special awards and make sure to stop and congratulate mr. stahl for his award for excellence in teaching!
